#31 Hosting Darkness

Mycelium is highly sensitive to light, just like the human eye. They can respond to light as low as that provided by a single star and can feel blinded by the sunlight on a bright day.
On one of the darkest days of the year and with the new moon, we dim the light of Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space to create a more intimate environment for the mycelium. We invite you to join in and adjust your eyes to this comfortable level of light. What do you see and feel in this darkened space? Which other senses get heightened?
To enhance the transformative effect of darkness, we invite you to enter the exhibition space in small groups after you’ve been served a cup of soup. You can select an arrival time when registering for your free ticket in the ticket link. The soup is prepared by Uno Fujisawa who uses partly the fruiting fungal bodies of the same mycelium used in the YUME YUME installation and others to awaken your palette. You are encouraged to bring your own cup for the soup.

Through the evening soup is served upon arrival.
Please select an arrival timeWe ask you to pick an arrival time so we can stagger the entry time of visitors into the exhibition space. We do this to ensure you have an intimate encounter with the works in the darkened Central Space. The different arrival times also help us to welcome you in the best possible way.
Ideally, maximum 15 people are in the exhibition space at once. On the evening, one of the hosts will guide you to the space once it is your time to go.
This manifestation is part of Manifestation #16: Descent into Fungal
Every Thursday evening during this manifestation, artists, thinkers, designers, poets, makers and breakers will present and perform in the Central Space for the public and for the special mycelium installation, developed by Dutch design brand YUME YUME. We collectively take care of the fungal floor. The mycelium will respond to us being in the space together and will therefore carry a fragment of all of us whilst we internalize or embrace some of their networks. In addressing the human audience as well as the fungal, we are envisioning a world order on non-human grounds. Who is the host and who is the parasite?
Mycelium is zeer gevoelig voor licht, net als het menselijk oog. Ze kunnen reageren op licht zo zacht als dat van een enkele ster en kunnen zich verblind voelen door het zonlicht op een heldere dag.
Op een van de donkerste dagen van het jaar en met nieuwe maan dimmen we het licht van Buro Stedelijk Central Space om een intiemere omgeving voor het mycelium te creëren. We nodigen je uit om je ogen aan te passen aan dit comfortabele lichtniveau. Wat zie en voel je in deze verduisterde ruimte? Welke andere zintuigen worden versterkt?
Om het transformerende effect van duisternis te versterken, nodigen we je uit om in kleine groepjes de tentoonstellingsruimte te betreden nadat je een kop soep hebt gekregen. Je kunt een aankomsttijd kiezen wanneer je je registreert voor je gratis ticket in de ticketlink. De soep is bereid door Uno Fujisawa die deels de vruchtlichamen van dezelfde mycelium gebruikt in de installatie van YUME YUME om je smaakpapillen te prikkelen. Je wordt aangemoedigd om je eigen kopje voor de soep mee te nemen.
Tijdschema:
18:30 – deuren gaan open
18:45 – eerste toegang tot de tentoonstelling; selecteer je gewenste aankomsttijd bij het registreren van je ticket
20:15 – laatste bezoek aan de tentoonstelling
Gedurende de avond wordt soep geserveerd bij aankomst.
Kies een aankomsttijd
We vragen je om een aankomsttijd te kiezen zodat we de toegang van bezoekers tot de tentoonstellingsruimte kunnen spreiden. We doen dit om ervoor te zorgen dat je een intieme ontmoeting hebt met de werken in de verduisterde Central Space. De verschillende aankomsttijden helpen ons ook om je zo goed mogelijk te ontvangen.
Idealiter zijn er maximaal 15 mensen tegelijk in de Central Space. Op de avond zelf zal een van de hosts je naar de ruimte begeleiden zodra het jouw tijd is.

Elke donderdagavond tijdens deze manifestatie presenteren en performen kunstenaars, denkers, ontwerpers, dichters, makers en brekers in de Central Space voor het publiek en voor de speciale myceliuminstallatie, ontwikkeld door het Nederlandse design merk YUME YUME. We zorgen samen voor de myceliumvloer. Het mycelium zal reageren op ons samenzijn in de ruimte en zal daarom een stukje van ons allemaal meedragen terwijl we sommige van hun netwerken internaliseren of omarmen. Door zowel het menselijke publiek als het myceliumnetwerk aan te spreken, stellen we ons een wereldorde op niet-menselijke gronden voor. Wie is de host en wie is de parasiet?
