Descent into the Fungal (2017)

Descent into the Fungal is a two-channel video installation. One video channel is situated within a scientific method of thinking— the artist thinks about issues of symbiosis and the ways in which fungal networks are intertwined with their surroundings. Here, the natural becomes the digital and vice-versa.The other video is from the perspective of the mushroom— it has its own language, albeit compressed and digitized in nature. The video presents fungi as a conscious being, giving personality and human-like behaviour to it. Presented on a green-screen background void of any surroundings, this channel contrasts with the documentary side and shows the fungus as its own sentient self.

The two channels are displayed facing each other, leaving the viewer situated between the ‘scientific’ and the ‘mushroom speak’.

Descent into the Fungal is een video-installatie met twee kanalen. Het ene videokanaal is een wetenschappelijke manier van denken – de kunstenaar denkt na over symbiose en de manier waarop schimmelnetwerken verweven zijn met hun omgeving. De andere video is vanuit het perspectief van de paddenstoel – deze heeft diens eigen taal, weliswaar gecomprimeerd en gedigitaliseerd van aard. De video presenteert schimmels als organisme met bewustzijn, het geeft persoonlijkheid en kent mensachtige eigenschappen aan hen toe. Gepresenteerd op een groen scherm zonder enige omgeving, contrasteert dit kanaal met de documentaire kant en toont de paddestoel als eigen bewuste zelf.

De twee kanalen worden tegenover elkaar getoond, waardoor de kijker zich tussen het ‘wetenschappelijke’ en de ‘mushroom speak’ bevindt.
