#20 Taking Root Among the Stars

Manifestation #20: Taking Root Among the Stars is the first chapter of a long-term project initiated by artists Anna Hoetjes and Müge Yilmaz. It takes Octavia Butler’s famous science-fiction novel from 1993, Parable of the Sower, as a starting point. The first entry in the fictional diary of Lauren Oya Olamina, the protagonist of the novel, takes place on the 20th of July 2024. As this date will soon manifest itself in reality, the artists will organize a symposium on this very date, accompanied by other events in 2023 and 2024. The aim of this project is to grow a community and offer a platform to exchange different speculative and feminist futures, celebrating Octavia Butler’s legacy and imagining counter movements for the times to come. 

In collaboration with Buro Stedelijk, Hoetjes and Yilmaz will create an intimate space at UNFAIR23. The installation will join parts of Müge Yilmaz’s feminist science fiction library The Adventures of Umay Ixa Kayakizi and Anna Hoetjes’ textile work Seven Sisters Fighting Back. The wooden goddesses that carry the library will find themselves surrounded by a textile ceiling that re-imagines the firmament of the night sky, bringing together scientific, mythical and feminist stories of cyclic movement and space travel. 

During UNFAIR23, from 16-19 November 2023, the booth will be open to the public to offer a moment of rest, pause, go through the books and reflect on the patchwork sky. On 18 November there will be the possibility to join the reading group Goddess Change and on 19 November senakirfa A. will join to offer a reading. 

This project will continue to take the form of a symposium and exhibition in 2024 in collaboration with W139 and Buro Stedelijk. 

Manifestation #20: Taking Root Among the Stars is het eerste hoofdstuk van het langetermijnproject geïnitieerd door kunstenaars Anna Hoetjes en Müge Yilmaz. Het neemt Octavia Butlers beroemde sciencefictionroman uit 1993, Parable of the Sower, als uitgangspunt. De eerste aantekening in het fictieve dagboek van Lauren Oya Olamina, de hoofdpersoon van de roman, vindt plaats op 20 juli 2024. Omdat deze datum zich binnenkort in de realiteit zal aandienen, zullen de kunstenaars juist op deze datum een symposium organiseren, aangevuld met andere evenementen in 2023 en 2024. Het doel van dit project is om een gemeenschap te laten groeien en een platform te bieden om verschillende speculatieve en feministische toekomsten uit te wisselen, Octavia Butlers nalatenschap te vieren en tegenbewegingen voor de komende tijd te verbeelden.

In samenwerking met Buro Stedelijk creëeren Hoetjes en Yilmaz een intieme ruimte op UNFAIR23. De installatie voegt delen van Müge Yilmaz’ feministische sciencefictionbibliotheek The Adventures of Umay Ixa Kayakizi en Anna Hoetjes’ textielwerk Seven Sisters Fighting Back samen. De houten godinnen die de bibliotheek dragen worden omringd door een textielplafond dat de sterrenhemel opnieuw verbeeldt en wetenschappelijke, mythische en feministische verhalen over cyclische beweging en ruimtereizen samenbrengt.

Tijdens UNFAIR23, van 16-19 november 2023, is de stand open voor het publiek om een moment van rust te bieden, te pauzeren, de boeken door te nemen en te reflecteren op de lappendekenhemel. Op 18 november is er de mogelijkheid om deel te nemen aan de leesgroep Goddess Change en op 19 november geeft senakirfa A. een voordracht.

Dit project krijgt een vervolg in de vorm van een symposium en tentoonstelling in 2024 in samenwerking met W139 en Buro Stedelijk.
