#4 Keti Koti Westerpark X Buro Stedelijk

with Atelier Code Noir and Frank Creton

EN

Every year on the 1st of July we commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery: Keti Koti. Keti Koti means “Broken Chains” in the Surinamese language Sranantongo. This year, several local residents in and around the Westerpark in Amsterdam, decided to work together and organize a month of events leading up to Keti Koti. Buro Stedelijk collaborates with them on a month-long manifestation in the Meterhuisje in the Westerpark and several windows by kunsttraject in the Staatsliedenbuurt.

For this manifestation #4 Keti Koti Westerpark X Buro Stedelijk we collaborated with Atelier Code Noir by Lelani Lewis and visual artist Frank Creton. Together we investigate ways of celebrating and mourning through food, its genealogies, and our colonial past. Lelani Lewis invites visitors into an interactive learning experience delving into the Caribbean cuisine and its histories.

In this manifestation we highlight some of Frank Creton’s works in which people as well as ingredients have a lead role. We combine the narratives around food with the people Creton represents in his works. Manifestation #4 opens on June 4 and closes after Keti Koti on July 2nd. During the weeks leading up to July 1, many different people from the neighborhood decided to activate the space by organizing different gatherings around commemoration, celebration and food.

Manifestation #4 invites you in and binds through food and local community.

NL
