#50: KETI KOTI X ROOTS TO FRUITS
Every year on the 1st of July, we commemorate slavery and celebrate the abolition of slavery: Keti Koti. In the month prior to this day, we show new work by artist and graphic designer Mirelle van Tulder on the windows of Buro Stedelijk’s Studio Space facing the Paulus Potterstraat.
In response to the invitation, Mirelle van Tulder, founder of ROOTS TO FRUITS, decided to focus on archival material of (unacknowledged) feminist groups in The Netherlands. The collages on the windows show images of feminist publishers, women in resistance, and documentary photographs of Keti Koti celebrations and commemorations throughout the decades.
On July 1, Buro Stedelijk will be closed, as we take the day off to celebrate freedom and commemorate slavery. Mirelle’s work will also be placed at the restricted entrance of Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space on the 1st of July.
Jaarlijks herdenken we op 1 juli de slavernij en vieren we de afschaffing van de slavernij: Keti Koti. In de maand voorafgaand aan deze dag tonen we nieuw werk van kunstenaar en grafisch ontwerper Mirelle van Tulder op de ramen van Buro Stedelijk’s Studio Space aan de Paulus Potterstraat.
Als reactie op de uitnodiging koos Mirelle van Tulder, oprichter van ROOTS TO FRUITS, voor archiefmateriaal van (niet-erkende) feministische groepen in Nederland. De collages op de ramen tonen beelden van feministische uitgevers, vrouwen in verzet en documentaire foto’s van Keti Koti vieringen en herdenkingen door de decennia heen.
Op 1 juli zal Buro Stedelijk gesloten zijn, omdat we die dag vrij nemen om de vrijheid te vieren en de slavernij te herdenken. Mirelle’s werk zal op 1 juli ook zichtbaar zijn bij de afgesloten ingang van Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space.
