#14 Exiting the Photographic Universe

Prof. Fred Ritchin discusses the impact of artificial intelligence on photography in the digital age.

EN

The much vaunted democratisation and ubiquity of the medium of photography in the digital age has brought us to a confounding state of general mistrust of the medium. With Artificial Intelligence this mistrust takes on even wider proportions on the quest for the truth. It threatens an accelerated decay of democratic and cultural institutions.

Buro Stedelijk hosts Prof Fred Ritchin within the context of Decay: An Ode to the Impermanent. Prof Ritchin discusses ‘Exiting the Photographic Universe’. We want to know if it is all doom and gloom and what perhaps we can learn from the current challenges in the digital age and AI.

Fred Ritchin is Dean Emeritus of the International Center of Photography and previously was professor of Photography and Imaging at New York University (1991-2014). Ritchin was picture editor of the New York Times Magazine (1978-82), created the first multimedia version of the New York Times newspaper (1994-95), and then conceived and edited the Times’s first non-linear online documentary project, “Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace,” nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in public service in 1997. His books on the future of imaging include In Our Own Image: The Coming Revolution in Photography (1990), After Photography (2008), and Bending the Frame: Photojournalism, Documentary, and the Citizen (2013). His next book will be called The Synthetic Eye, to be published by Thames & Hudson next year, on photography and the challenges of artificial intelligence. He is also working with major organizations and freelance photographers to establish international standards to differentiate actual photographs from manipulated and synthetic imaging in the press and elsewhere. Ritchin lives in New York and Paris.

NL

Buro Stedelijk ontvangt prof. Fred Ritchin in het kader van Decay: An Ode to the Impermanent. Prof Ritchin bespreekt ‘Exiting the Photographic Universe’.

Ritchin woont in New York en Parijs.

Every year on the 1st of July we commemorate slavery and celebrate the abolition of slavery: Keti Koti. Since we believe that Keti Koti should be a national holiday, we are closed on the 1st of July. We asked Lydiënne Albertoe to design a graphic work for this particular occasion. The work is placed on the door of our Central Space and the windows of the Studio Space.
