In Manifestation #26: Script 1: Whispers (Tell the Waters What the Clay Kept Secret II) artist Ola Hassanain hones in on an intimate ‘site of catastrophe’: her grandmother’s house.
This house sits amidst the Gezira scheme in Sudan, a 4,300-km network of canals and ditches to irrigate fields. The area is renowned for its vast agricultural produce, yet the scheme has led to ecological dilemmas that threaten inhabitation.
Hassanain’s grandmother’s political engagement is expressed through the ritual of Ruqya (رقية), wherein one talks to water and prays for it to hold blessing rather than harm. How can these private yet incessant whispers to the water be amplified and given political leverage?
In Manifestation #26: Script 1: Whispers (Tell the Waters What the Clay Kept Secret II) zoomt kunstenaar Ola Hassanain in op een intieme ‘plaats van catastrofe’: haar grootmoeders huis.
Dit huis staat midden in het Gezira-plan, Sudan, een kanalennetwerk van 4.300 km om akkers te irrigeren. Het gebied, bekend om haar landbouwproducten, heeft geleid tot ecologische dilemma’s die de bewoonbaarheid bedreigen.
De politieke betrokkenheid van Hassanain’s grootmoeder uit zich in het ritueel Ruqya (رقية), waarbij men tegen water spreekt en bidt dat het geen kwaad maar zege brengt. Hoe kan dit particuliere, aanhoudende, gefluister versterkt worden en politieke invloed verwerven?
