#34 What Can’t It Do?

See the work by Waèl Allouche in our Studio Space. He asked an early version of the current ChatGPT: “What is it a flag can’t do?” This question unexpectedly got answered in a very political way.

EN

Waèl Allouche’s work What a flag can’t do / long live Palestine (2020) is installed in our Studio Space. Allouche is interested in the way abstractions, such as data and algorithms, shape reality and vice versa. By digitizing phenomena and objects from the world around him he tries to understand them, before returning them to reality as reconstructions. In his work he questions the medium and symbols around him.

In 2020, for the project WHOmanity, he questioned the flag as a medium and its formal properties. He started a conversation with an early version of the current ChatGPT, a Plug and Play Language Model (PPLM). He asked: “What is it a flag can’t do?” This question unexpectedly got answered in a very political way.

The PPLM answered: “It’s a flag that has no legal standing, which is why we have to take action to protect the people of Palestine. We need to stop the use of flags and symbols. I hope that all the political parties can do more to protect Palestinian people, not just the people.”

WHOmanity is a project that showed flags made by artists on all Amsterdam ferries. The project was about the powerful communication means of flags, presenting 13 flags that play with language, images, symbols and beliefs.

Allouche explains about the work:

“Flags are all of all ages. But they do tell us the story of who is or isn’t seen or acknowledged within the times of nation states. They tell us who is and isn’t occupied or deemed inexistent. We decided to exhibit this flag to raise awareness for the current Genocide happening in Gaza.”

Allouche’s flag is visible daily from street level at Paulus Potterstraat 13. Now even more poignant than when it was made. What is a flag, what can it do, and what does it say about our lives, geopolitics and struggles?

Het werk What a flag can’t do / long live Palestine (2020) van Waèl Allouche is geïnstalleerd in onze Studio Space.

Every year on the 1st of July we commemorate slavery and celebrate the abolition of slavery: Keti Koti. Since we believe that Keti Koti should be a national holiday, we are closed on the 1st of July. We asked Lydiënne Albertoe to design a graphic work for this particular occasion. The work is placed on the door of our Central Space and the windows of the Studio Space.
