#16 Descent into Fungal

Amid a world in decay, we are in need of other futures. Descending into the fungal, an infinite network knitted by an interplay of both human and non-human actors reveals itself. Mycelium is a fungus with a root-like structure, consisting of a mass of branching threads. It provides a transportation network to pass nutrients and electric currents along the fungal body, but mycelium’s networks are equally used to communicate with and between other life forms. It is sensitive, adaptive, can memorize and learn.

Design brand YUME YUME developed the mycelium installation especially for Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space. Every Thursday for the duration of the manifestation, artists, designers, poets, and other thinkers and makers will present and perform here, with both museum visitors and the mycelium as their audience. A change in the mycelium’s surroundings, such as a gathering of people, will affect its receptive networks, much like the mycelium’s presence here may be carried forth in some way by those who met it. By acknowledging both the human and the fungal audience, a decentering of human beings becomes imaginable. Begging the question: who is the host, and who is the parasite?

In collaboration with mycelium networks and technology, biotechnology company MycoWorks developed Reishi™, a biomaterial with leather-like properties and aesthetics. Here it is developed into the first head-to-toe outfit designed by YUME YUME. Artist and designer Don Yaw Kwaning re-evaluates the properties of various vegetables and carefully transforms them into new materials. He explores alternative realities through deep material research and experiments. Visual artist Milena Anna Bouma creates a hyper-digitalized, artificial world in which the natural is reimagined as hyper-constructable. The two-channel video installation by artist Andrey Shental shows the perspective of the mushroom combined with a scientific method of thinking. Shental questions the natural becoming the digital, and vice versa.

This manifestation wishes to offer a platform for the exchange of speculative futures. We invite you to sit with the fungal, to listen, to take the time and envision collectivity from its perspective. Which possible futures emerge?

Omringd door een wereld in verval, zoeken we naar andere toekomstperspectieven. Afdalend in de grond, openbaart zich een oneindig netwerk gebreid door een samenspel van zowel menselijke als niet-menselijke actoren. Mycelium is een netwerk van schimmel met een wortelachtige structuur, bestaande uit een massa vertakte draden. Het biedt een transportnetwerk om voedingsstoffen en elektrische stromen door het schimmellichaam te laten stromen. Ook worden de netwerken van mycelium gebruikt om met en tussen andere levensvormen te communiceren. Het is gevoelig, adaptief, kan memoriseren en leren.

Designmerk YUME YUME ontwikkelde deze myceliuminstallatie speciaal voor Buro Stedelijks Central Space. Gedurende de manifestatie treden hier elke donderdag kunstenaars, ontwerpers, dichters en andere denkers en makers op, met zowel museumbezoekers als het mycelium als publiek. Een verandering in de omgeving van het mycelium, zoals een samenkomst van mensen, zal diens ontvankelijke netwerken beïnvloeden – net zoals de ontmoeting met het mycelium door zal leven, al is het in de herinnering van de museumbezoekers. Door zowel het menselijke als het schimmelpubliek te erkennen, wordt de mens gedecentraliseerd. Maar wie is de host en wie is de parasiet?

Biotechnologiebedrijf MycoWorks ontwikkelde in samenwerking met zowel myceliumnetwerken als technologie Reishi™, een biomateriaal met leerachtige eigenschappen. Hier is de eerste top-tot-teen Reishi™ outfit te zien, ontworpen door YUME YUME. Kunstenaar en ontwerper Don Yaw Kwaning evalueert de eigenschappen van verschillende groenten en transformeert deze zorgvuldig tot nieuwe materialen. Hij toont alternatieve realiteiten door middel van diepgaand materiaalonderzoek en experimenten. Beeldend kunstenaar Milena Anna Bouma creëert een hypergedigitaliseerde, kunstmatige wereld waarin het natuurlijke als hyper-maakbaar wordt gepresenteerd. De video-installatie van kunstenaar Andrey Shental toont zowel het perspectief van de paddenstoel als een wetenschappelijk denkkader. Shental zet daarmee vraagtekens bij het natuurlijke dat digitaal wordt, en omgekeerd.

Deze manifestatie wil een platform bieden voor de uitwisseling van speculatieve toekomstbeelden. We nodigen je uit om de tijd te nemen om te zitten, te luisteren en het perspectief van het mycelium voor te stellen: wat zegt het over collectiviteit? En welke mogelijke toekomsten komen daaruit voort?
