#72 KETI KOTI X ABOUT LOVE
Every year on the 1st of July we commemorate slavery and celebrate the abolition of slavery: Keti Koti. Since we believe that Keti Koti should be a national holiday, we are closed on the 1st of July. Each year we ask a graphic designer to create a work for Buro Stedelijk's windows facing the Paulus Potterstraat. This year Jeanine van Berkel created the work ABOUT LOVE.
Jeanine van Berkel has created an archive centered on vernacular diasporic design, where she collects, creates, and “names” visual elements and symbols that reflect diasporic vernacular culture. From this she extracts colours, shapes and fonts which she applies in her own way. For this year’s window design, she used a bunch of words as a web to weave from: future, history, identity, chains broken, transformation, reborn, intertwined, connection, celebration, ancestors, growth, roots, portal, diaspora, vernacular, cultural heritage, braided (hair), holding, together, powerful fists, black joy, mat beater, love, white plastic chair, necklace, power within, layering, patterns, dressing, symbolism, archive, shaved ice, barra, youth – combining symbols and shapes linked to these words to create the work ABOUT LOVE.
The graphics are shown on the windows of Buro Stedelijk’s Studio Space facing the Paulus Potterstraat. On July 1, Buro Stedelijk will be closed, as we take the day off to celebrate freedom and commemorate slavery. Jeanine’s work will also be placed at the restricted entrance of Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space on the 1st of July.
