#53 I Must Still Grow in the Dark

Dark matter permeates our universe—astronomically, biologically, and, as the group show #53: I Must Still Grow in the Dark proposes, artistically too. While art exhibitions have historically revered light, elevating it as the precondition for visual experience and aesthetic appreciation, this one shifts our attention to darkness. Here, darkness is not presented as mere absence, but as a palpable presence: a generative force, a connective tissue weaving together a constellation of contemporary artworks across diverse media.

Through installations, videos, photographs, and prints composed of what might be called dark matter—black ink, dark earth, and unilluminated space—darkness reveals itself as a generative force, alive with the capacity to act. Among other things, it disrupts photo-centric regimes, dilutes the boundaries between body and space, shields knowledge from outsiders, and nurtures new imaginaries.

The dark matter animating the works in this exhibition may not move galaxies, as its astronomical counterpart does, nor sequester carbon dioxide like its biological analogue, but it pulses with a radical vitality of its own. Through its actions and interactions, artistic dark matter shakes the anti-dark and anti-Black foundations of modernity. It contests the long-standing association of darkness with evil, savagery, and ignorance.

One of the premises underlying I Must Still Grow in the Dark is that modernity’s adoration of light, culminating in the Enlightenment, was accompanied by a profound abhorrence of darkness. An abhorrence that cannot be disentangled from a fierce hostility toward racial Blackness.

Donkere materie doordringt ons universum—astronomisch, biologisch en, zoals de groepstentoonstelling #53 I Must Still Grow in the Dark laat zien, ook artistiek. Waar tentoonstellingen van oudsher het licht hebben verheerlijkt en opgevoerd als voorwaarde voor visuele ervaring en esthetisch genot, verlegt deze tentoonstelling de aandacht naar de duisternis. Zij wordt hier niet gepresenteerd als afwezigheid, maar als voelbare aanwezigheid: een scheppende kracht, een verbindend weefsel dat een constellatie van hedendaagse kunstwerken in uiteenlopende media samenbrengt.

Via installaties, video’s, foto’s en prenten, samengesteld uit wat beschouwd kan worden als donkere materie—zwarte inkt, donkere aarde en onverlichte ruimtes—wordt duidelijk dat er een vitale kracht door de duisternis stroomt die aanzet tot handelen. Ze verstoort lichtminnende regimes, vervaagt de grenzen tussen lichaam en ruimte, beschermt kennis tegen buitenstaanders en voedt de verbeelding.

De donkere materie die de werken in deze tentoonstelling bezielt, beweegt misschien geen sterrenstelsels, zoals haar astronomische tegenhanger doet, en slaat geen CO₂ op, zoals haar biologische evenknie, maar zij pulseert met een eigen radicale vitaliteit op zichzelf. Door haar acties en interacties brengt artistieke donkere materie de anti-donkere en anti-Zwarte fundamenten van de moderniteit aan het wankelen. Ze stelt de hardnekkige associatie van duisternis met kwaad, wreedheid en onwetendheid ter discussie.

Een van de uitgangspunten van I Must Still Grow in the Dark is dat de verheerlijking van licht binnen de moderniteit, die culmineerde in de Verlichting, gepaard ging met een diepe afkeer van duisternis. Een afkeer die niet los te zien is van een felle vijandigheid tegenover raciale Zwartheid.
