#58 The Black Film Critic Syllabus

Especially for Museumnacht 2024, Buro Stedelijk’s curator Rita Ouédraogo invites Paris-based author Fanta Sylla to revisit her project The Black Film Critic Syllabus and offer us three recommended films. Fanta Sylla created The Black Film Critic Syllabus in 2016, an endeavour that she described as:

‘There are two ways to understand that title: It is a resource curated for Black film lovers and critics and/or for anyone who’d like to find new ways to approach so-called Black cinema. The Syllabus is the culmination of years of reading and research, a testament of my own never satisfied curiosity.’

For one night only, we present the following films on loop:

• ∞ Flight of The Swan by Ngozi Onwurah, 1992 (12 min) lg. EN cc.
• ∞ HYPERFATE by Christelle Oyiri, 2022 (13 min) lg. FR cc. EN
• ∞ Naked Blue by Manon Lutanie and Mati Diop, 2022 (17 min)

Sylla will wrote an essay Manifestation #67: FLIGHT, accompanying the three films for the audience to engage with, which you can find here.

Frédérique Albert-Bordenave developed the spatial design that accompanied last year’s Museumnacht, as well as this years manifestation.
