Razia Barsatie
Razia Barsatie (b.1982) approaches her artistic practice with a natural instinct for visual language and a focused, intuitive process. Her work is marked by precision, imagination, and a willingness to confront complex themes. Her practice centers on the sensory and symbolic power of herbs rooted in her Surinamese heritage.
Through scent, video animation, and drawings on ecological materials, she constructs emotional landscapes that explore the complex interplay between the conscious, unconscious, and subconscious. Her work invites reflection on memory, transformation, and cultural continuity. Scent plays a fundamental role in her artistic research—both as a literal medium and a metaphorical tool for evoking personal and ancestral histories.
In 2024, Barsatie participated in the KNUST and CBK Zuidoost Bijlmer AIR programme in Ghana. In 2023, her installation Gift of a Root—which explored cultural connections through plants—was presented at the Belmonte Arboretum in Wageningen, the Netherlands. In 2022, she initiated the Cupp Collective, an exchange program involving seven artists based in Suriname and the Netherlands. The project focused on mentorship and the sharing of knowledge and experiences with natural and local materials, offering valuable insights that strengthen the position of artists in both regions.
Barsatie completed a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2022 and graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2012.
