Seeping Waters (2023 – 2024)
by Ola Hassanain
variable sizes / glazed ceramic, fired ceramic and air-dried clay stained with hibiscus
A trio of organic shapes that symbolize the temporalities of clay soil and irrigation water, they speak to what unfolded in my grandmother’s house as the water seeps into the clay. To further hone in on the time period of when catastrophe unfolds. The trio is accompanied by a cracked fired clay piece with growing traces of rust, and a carpet of air-dried clay, stained with hibiscus.
This constellation speaks to what happens as the wet clay comes in contact with different objects in the house, namely hibiscus leaves from the yard, and metal cabinets indoors. The forms speculate and try to come to terms with what is yet to come and what it means to live in a cyclic state of catastrophe.
