Lakisha Apostel

The performance artist Lakisha Apostel was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1999 and grew up in Curaçao. In 2019, she crossed the bridge from Curaçao to the Netherlands to pursue her studies in fine art at the Royal Academy of The Hague, and in 2023 she obtained her bachelor’s and is currently still located there. Through embodied rituals in which the body engages with apparatuses and surrounding space, Lakisha aims to address displacement and the longing for belonging, more specifically how uprootedness exists and functions in her homeland of Curaçao. Her practice has the goal of creating language and methodologies of healing when it pertains to displacement, which she hopes can add to the discourse of uprootedness in Curaçao.
