A Whispering Dam (2024)
by Ola Hassanain
220 cm x 310 cm / wood, plaster and paint
A segment of the Sennar Dam – redirecting the Blue Nile waters into the Gezira agricultural scheme- stands on the water in the room. A relic, testimony of an obsolete modernity. Prayer verses whispered from the guts of this monolith redeem the water from its former domination role as it slowly flows between the vaults – a reparative ritual. Whispering prayer onto water is practice known as “Ruqya” رقية.
The Whispering Dam structure was originally an intervention to be erected in the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023, with the design support of Andrés Novo.
