#77 Repainting Subway Art
See the hommage by graffiti artist Tripl/Furious to the book by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, on the windows of Buro Stedelijk’s Studio Space facing the Paulus Potterstraat.
The talented Dutch graffiti artist Tripl has interpreted and recreated Subway Art (1984) by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, in his own unique way. Hereby offering a huge shout-out and homage to the original graffiti writers, photographers, and the global graffiti movement.
The publication Repainting Subway Art (Ruyzdael Publishing, Amsterdam 2024) is the culmination of a tribute to the inventiveness and creativity that have inspired over 40 years of graffiti and the continuation of a dialogue with the makers of the original book and graffiti as a whole.
On one side of Buro Stedelijk’s Studio Space windows, you see a photo by Martha Cooper ‘Midg, 1983. Passing over St. Ann Street, South Bronx.’ on top, and bellow ‘Tripl, 2018. Passing over Westelijke Randweg, Haarlem.’ by Dear.
And on the other side you can see ‘Part of Style Wars whole car by Noc167, NYC, 1981.’ a photo by Henry Chalfant. The bottom picture was taken by the artist himself, ‘Part of Tryple RFA whole car by Tripl, Netherlands, 2019′.
