#37 Keti Koti Westerpark

For the second edition of Keti Koti Westerpark, we welcome you in the installation by Kevin Osepa at 'het Meterhuisje' in Westerpark, Amsterdam.

EN

“Out of the blue comes the whitest wash,” reads the slogan of Reckitt’s Crown Blue Squares, or blous as it’s known locally on Curaçao. Initially created to whiten laundry optically, the piercing blue pigment has taken on new meanings in Afro-Caribbean cultures. In everyday use, blous offers protection against the harms of the ‘evil eye’, which is believed to cause misfortunes such as jealousy, sickness, and bad luck. Those who grew up on the island can likely recall how mothers and grandmothers – women in particular – would use blous to bathe infants, cover their loved ones on a big day, or clean surfaces around the home. As such, it has become an indispensable part of the Caribbean household. These subtle – sometimes hidden – acts are connected to brua, the spiritual customs and superstitions practiced by inhabitants of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

Seemingly mundane practices of ritualistic cleansing (kore ku fuku) with blous have, in a sense, almost rendered the vibrant blue squares paradoxically invisible; to disappear into the domestic sphere. Yet, this mundaneness belies the deep historical entanglements between the Caribbean and Europe stemming from centuries of colonialism. In many ways, the familiar little tablet confronts us with resonances of the colonial history that surrounds its origins. Additionally, it shows how our lives and identities have become intricately bound up in a common destiny.

With his Afro-Curaçaoan identity as his entry point, Kevin Osepa visualizes how the reality of daily life and the magical world of the Caribbean co-exist in everyday practices of domesticity, love, and survival.

NL
