#19 Raw Heat, Black Sweat
Join us for a co-curated evening by Marcel van den Berg, a block party at the Central Space celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop Culture with KC, Loopey, Farida Sedoc, Jeff Croese and Shigeo Arikawa.
On August 11, 1973, a young dj named Kool Herc did something special behind the turntables at a party.
This spark helped ignite a cultural explosion
we now know as Hip-Hop Culture.
Today, 50 years 2 months and a day later
What we’re celebrating here in Central Space of
Buro Stedelijk located in this old house called
Stedelijk Museum, is a never ending rhythm,
a drum groove, the Funk.
To me Hip Hop is the Foundation
Music is the gasoline
Graffiti is that pure expressive energy
Dj-ing is the storyteling
It’s always gonna be Raw Heat
It’s forever a product built on Black Sweat
Historians of Inner City Life producing
Vocals and Sound of Struggle and Pride
Breathing in Babylon through Free Expression
Escaping Babylon through Creativity
Even tho it’s not your game.
You didn’t make the rules
Everything comes hard.
But the first thing is getting in the game
Once we’re in the game we wanna
Master it.
Once we’ve mastered it we wanna
Transform it.
Tonight we celebrate.
Immersed in a Sauce filled with
Dedication and Love
Gotta keep the Juices Runnin
For the Culture and it’s People.
This is Us
This is for You
Cuz All we got iz Us.
We be dem.
Blessed People
Tonight I wanna ask one favor of you
Imagine what we’ll all be like in our own game.

On October 12 we gather at an evening organized by Marcel van den Berg during which we celebrate his process at Buro Stedelijk. In celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop culture he has invited KC, Loopey, Farida Sedoc, Jeff Croese and Shigeo Arikawa for a block party packed with music, video and paint. Marcel collaborated with Shigeo on a video made during his time in the Central Space and with KC on the soundtrack. The video edit is an ongoing process, of which the current version will be shown in a loop during Raw Heat, Black Sweat.
KC and Loopey perform live, and Marcel, Farida and Jeff play back to back. This manifestation is a celebration not of the end result, but of the process and experimentation that Manifestation #8: To Be Determined fosters.
