Same Taste
by Basir Mahmood
Same Taste is a drawing of a collection of thoughts and ideas conceived while listening to the two-day-long Listening Sessions manifestation #1 by the Buro Stedelijk. The artist considered his participation that of a voyeur, whose mind began to build its own parallel when he started to concentrate through listening. Other than the sound, the second element available for consumption during the session was drinks—water, tea, and coffee—that were served for the speakers who took sips while speaking and for the listeners who poured them into cups during breaks. The artist observed the form of the liquid change, from the container to the cups, to its taste.
Whatever he could carry from the session back to his studio was handed over to the actors that he invited. Another two-day session took place in his studio, in which actors reenacted the artist’s collection of observations, using liquid as the only means of interaction.
The artist drew from the reenactments a pattern that can repeat itself countless times in any possible direction and on any surface.
