During Museumnacht, you can make your own wayang puppets at Buro Stedelijk and watch the shadow theatre of Wayang Women, with music by Rani Jambak. This all-female shadow puppetry company performs wayang with a feminist edge and modern soundscapes produced by DJs.
With these puppets, Wayang Women tell Southeast Asian ghost stories. Wayang kulit is traditionally performed only by men, so the stories have always been told from a male point of view. Wayang Women tell them from a female perspective.
Buro Stedelijk has invited this Southeast Asian collective on the occasion of the exhibition Names in Our Veins, which brings together FX Harsono, a pioneer of contemporary Indonesian art, and Vincent Ruijters, an Amsterdam-based artist of Indonesian descent.
